Before you pay

Do you actually need to translate it?

It depends on who receives it, not on the certificate. These are the cases we checked on each office’s official page:

FilingTranslation needed?What the office says
Mexican dual nationality at a Mexican consulate in the U.S.NoIf the birth certificate is in English, the consulate does not ask for a translation. Source: Mexican Consulate in Miami
Registering the U.S. certificate at a Registro Civil in Mexico (inserción)Yes, but not by usMexico asks for a translation by a perito traductor authorized in Mexico. Ours does not qualify for this filing. Source: Mexican Consulate in Miami

Transcribing the birth at the JCE (Dominican Republic)YesA translation by a foreign translator must be apostilled. We deliver it notarized in Florida so you can request the apostille. Source: Junta Central Electoral
Another country, a school or a university abroadIt dependsAsk that office two things: which translators it accepts and whether the translation must be apostilled. Send us their instructions and we will tell you if we can do it before you pay.

Requirements can change and vary by consulate. The receiving office always has the final word.

Questions about translating a U.S. birth certificate

Do I need to translate my child’s U.S. birth certificate for Mexican dual nationality?

Not if you register the child at a Mexican consulate in the U.S.: the Mexican Consulate in Miami states that a certificate issued in English does not need a translation. It is needed for registering the certificate at a Registro Civil in Mexico, and there it must be done by a perito traductor authorized in Mexico.

Is your translation valid in Mexico?

Not for registering a foreign birth certificate at a Registro Civil in Mexico, which requires a perito traductor authorized there. For other uses, ask the receiving office which translators it accepts.

Do I need to apostille the translation?

Some offices ask for it, for example the JCE in the Dominican Republic when the translator is not Dominican. In that case order the notarized version: the apostille is then requested from the Florida Department of State.

How much does it cost?

$29 for a one-page birth certificate. $25 for each additional page and $30 once per order if you need it notarized. The final price is confirmed before payment.

Can I send a photo taken with my phone?

Yes, if the whole page is in frame, in focus and legible, with the edges intact. Send the back too if it has anything on it.

Does the long-form or the short-form certificate matter?

We translate whichever one you send, exactly as it is. Which one you need depends on the receiving office, so ask them before ordering the certificate from the state.
